Does a pile of ironing make you smile?

Sometimes, when my ironing looks like this, I grin ear to ear.  Doilies that needed freshening up, a vintage tablecloth that I love to use with my turquoise Fiesta dishes from Great Grama are on the docket.  On the far end of the ironing board the brown and white gingham check is a 1950's house dress that I wear when driving my '57 Chevy.
My vintage tablecloths require sprinkling before even thinking about ironing them.  A friend told me that her mother used to sprinkle the clothes then roll them up and put them in a bag in the refrigerator before ironing them.  Knowing me, I'd put the clothes in the frig and forget them there!

When I was a little girl I had a pink ironing board, complete with a silver insulated cover and a little iron that plugged in and heated up!  I remember my Mom letting me wash all the doll clothes and then hang them on the line with my little wicker basket and clothes pins.  Next would come ironing.  I thought it was fun then...

Now, let's see...would I rather iron or eat cookies?

Or go for a ride?  Gotta change clothes, I choose ride!  I finished the ironing, not to worry!

  1. Hi Tammy,
Love the yellow and red table cloth and your cute graphic. I hated ironing, but as a teen made all my spending money "taking in ironing". I was paid by the piece, like 10 cents (sound right others?) and that's how I bought my first pair of Bass Weejuns, a mid-60s rage in southern Indiana. I ironed all summer for that pair of shoes, and apparently a glimpse into my future because buying shoes is still how I prefer to spend my hard earned money (sure wish I could wear heels, there are some killer ones out there!) 2. When I was little the lady who babysat me took in ironing too. (apparently she was a glutton for punishment)anyway I would sit under her ironing board and we would both sing all day while she ironed. I also had a ironing board and would iron my doll clothes too. My Aunt Clara also sprinkled her clothes and put them in the fridge. She said the had to "season". She was horrified that I took clothes straight out of the dryer and stuck them on. But then again, she hated dryers. I would definitely choose cookies and riding over ironing!

    Blessings

  4. My grandmother sprinkled too - and then it went in the fridge. She ironed everything including my father's underwear. When I got married I was a Thoroughly Modern Millie and for years and years I never touched an iron. Permanent press for me and pulled out of the dryer immediately.

  6. That ironing looks fun...especially with the 7up bottle sprinkler. My grandmother used to do the exact same thing. Such sweet memories.

  7. I've never seen a 7-up bottle used to sprinkle the clothes -- where did you get the little gadget on top? Very cute. I only iron when I have to. Hubby takes all his shirts to the drycleaner here where they iron them for next to nothing. So worth it! Have a great day. Tammy

  8. I have done this. Ironing from the fridge. So many years ago I couldn't tell you if it worked or not. Maybe in this heat it would be great. Love to iron vintage linens....these are beautiful...smiles...Renee

  9. That was Grandma Zetta's ironing "sprinkler" complete with 7-up bottle...I nearly swooned when I saw it. I actually went back in time for a minute...weird! All those hankies I ironed using that sprinkler. =D

  15. Oh Tammy, yet another cute and entertaining post. My mom had a Coke bottle sprinkler. She would let me sprinkle the clothes and roll them up. I also got to iron my Dad's hankies which was such a thrill! I don't have to iron much anymore and I'm okay with that. :)

  16. I remember the clothes being 'sprinkled' with water before ironing. I wish I had a sprinkler. Spray bottles just don't cut it. Very pretty tablecloth and doilies.
Now I want to see you in your gingham dress with your '57 Chevy.
    Have a happy day!

  17. I remember this so well...my Mom would set her ironing board up in the dining room so she could see into the living room and watch her soaps....And the pop bottle with the sprinkler on it! Gosh, the hours she spent there....I have to say I hate ironing and I do not do it....my husband on the other hand is GREAT at it! He was a bachelor before he met and was very proficient at it, why change things???? I wish I could take a rise in that Chevy!!!! Sandy

  19. If it's vintage, then it is pure joy to iron. Otherwise, not so much. :-)
