My son was in his Senior year of high school when 9/11 happened. By January he had made the decision to join the Air Force. I cried a lot! If you read my very first post you'll see how my craft room came to be in his old bedroom. I missed him so much in his first four years of Active Duty when he was stationed in Tacoma, Washington; but even that was easier than his current assignment: Pearl Harbor, Hawaii! Washington is a two hour time difference, I could call him or I could wait until the time was right, Hawaii has a five hour time difference and a trip 'home' is a lot more expensive than flying from Seattle.
Off we go into the wild blue yonder
Flying high into the sky!
I picked up this 1940s sheet music for the Army Air Corps theme song and put Mr. Wonderful to work framing it up for me. A thrift store frame and then my creative husband layered vintage sheet music and printed up pictures of our son's ribbons (from his Air Force awards on his uniform) and used them as a banner across the top!
My Fly Boy, ( I mean Technical Sgt.) will be home on leave enjoying the best of the heat and humidity we can offer him for the next 10 days. We will also celebrate his 29th birthday! I'm so happy to have a reason to cook the foods he loves and talk to my son 'live and in color".
There's no place like home!
I have a son who would love to be in the air force. Tell your son thank you for his service. =)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your time together!! Happy week to you guys! xo Holly

Have a lovely visit with your son. We love and miss them so much! With our son we had so many expectations about his homecoming. He was a missionary for 2 years in Brazil and was due home around 9-11 on that fateful September. When they closed the airports and no planes were allowed to fly, we were so anxious about his homecoming. He made it home two weeks later, but his sister was so full of anxiety and expectations that she had a tantrum with screaming and door slamming within a few hours of his return home. I know how a mother feels about their sons...especially when they are serving their country...or their church. I just know you will have a sunnier homecoming than we did. =D This post sure brought back some memories.
ReplyDeleteHave fun spoiling your handsome son. Love your display and the tribute.

Dearest Tammy,
ReplyDeleteYou'll never know how your post has touched this Momma's heart! How I understand the tears you have cried for your son. When my youngest, tim, joined the Marine Corp I found myself crying for months. It was so difficult letting him go...and, into a harsh world situation. I have prayed for him a thousand times andasking God to hold him close.
I am so proud of your son...and, thank you for raising him to have a heart and soul that serves. What a blessing our military young people are to all of us!
You have created such a meaningful post with all the red, white and blue...stars and stripes! I delighted in each photo and comment!
Have a precious time with your patriot these next ten days!
Blessings and Aloha,
Carolynn
ps. My husband is a retired Naval Officer and we were stationed at Pearl Harbor two different times....(my children were both born in Honolulu.) We loved Hawaii....but, often, felt homesick for the Mainland.
Tammy,
ReplyDeleteI hope you and your family have a fabulous next ten days with your boy! I know you have been counting down the days, and getting everything just perfect for him. Though I'm sure what he wants most is a good hug from his Mama! :)
All of your patriotic things are wonderful!
Erica
Again, please thank your son for his service, from me. Have fun, and let me know when you get your package!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meri
As a retired military (A.F.) wife I know how difficult it can be. Your son is a treasure to our country.
ReplyDeleteThe room is adorable!
